Automattic, the company behind WordPress, has announced the acquisition of WooThemes, best known for developing WooCommerce along with other Themes and plugins for WordPress. The actual figure of the acquisition is believed to be worth $30 million in cash and stock, representing the biggest Automattic purchase has made to date.
Automattic not only takes over WooCommerce, but also all the rest of plugins, Themes and associated projects, together with all of WooThemes 55-person staff. According to different announcements of the deal WooCommerce will continue to be run as a separate brand with little interruption to existing services, but the former WooThemes team will be now Automatticians going forward.

It’s pretty clear that Automattic is acquiring WooThemes just for the WooCommerce plugin, but I hope they don´t neglect now the rest of Themes and plugins.
Sounds like a good move, but I don’t want to get too excited about it.
Time will tell.
Great news, I’m sure Automattic has great plans for WooCommerce 🙂
